The Common Heat railway arch on Coldharbour Lane at night, lit from inside

Arch 214, Coldharbour Lane, 6:10 pm

A small sauna under a railway arch, for anyone with an hour and a towel.

About - Common Heat

Under the arches of Coldharbour Lane there is a room that is always warm. Three saunas, two cold plunges and a lounge where the kettle never quite goes off.

We built it for the neighbourhood. Eight people a round, no more, so the top bench is never crowded and nobody has to talk unless they want to. Most people go three times round: heat, cold, rest. Then they stay for tea.

The stove burns at ninety degrees. The plunge sits at six. Somewhere between the two, people who arrived as strangers start saying goodnight to each other by name.

Gradient from orange at 90°C to blue at 6°C. Move across it to read the temperature.
